Throughout August, “The Green Machine” held meetings via Zoom and Google Meet with Edina public officials to discuss the “state of STEM” opportunities in our community. These meetings were to share information about the 2020 FIRST Robotics competitions, and to discuss with them how STEM programs, particularly programs that are school-based, have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. During each meeting, three 1816 team members presented to the selected person in that meeting, and ended with issues and concerns directed especially for them. So far, we have met with Edina High School Principal Andy Beaton and Assistant Principal Troy Stein; District 49 state senator, Melissa Franzen; District 49A state representative, Heather Edelson, and Mary Manderfeld, Director of Equity and Enrollment, Edina Public Schools. In all meetings, each official has had very insightful thoughts and information for us on the status of STEM, and how we can continue to work together to create additional STEM opportunities for students.
