In the world of robotics, innovation is not just about designing cutting-edge robots; it’s also about nurturing and empowering the next generation of engineers and innovators. One remarkable event that embodies this ideal is MinneTrials, an off-season practice game that the “Green Machine” participated in for the first time this year, which provided rookies with a unique opportunity to take the lead and served as a crucial prelude to this years game challenge, “CRESCENDO.” During MinneTrials, veterans and seniors step back, creating an environment where rookies and newer members can immerse themselves in the exciting realm of robotics and explore different roles within the team. Ava A., a rookie, sees MinneTrials as a golden opportunity. “I thought it was a really good opportunity to try out different roles and gain valuable experience in positions I was interested in trying out previously,” Ava shares.

MinneTrials was born from the idea that the best way for new members to learn is by doing. It’s a unique opportunity for rookies to control designing, programming, and executing a robotics project. By letting them take the lead, we aim to instill a sense of responsibility and ownership. Another team member, Michael P., produced video overview of our experience:

However, the event wasn’t just about technical skills, but also about building confidence and fostering collaboration. Rookies learned not only how to navigate the intricacies of robotics but also how to effectively communicate and work as part of a team. Rithwik, a first-year member, delved into prototyping and took on the role of a human player. “MinneTrials taught me how to quickly prototype and decide on designs. It also gave me insights into being a human player,” Rithwik explains. The real excitement unfolded at the competition, where rookies, like Rithwik, witnessed their robots in action, learning not only from their own experiences but also by observing others in the heat of the competition. These insights became valuable lessons that have informed our strategic approach to the CRESCENDO Game.

With the release of the CRESCENDO game in early January (see the game animation here),  it is clear that MinneTrials was not merely an offseason game but a strategic investment in the growth of our team. These experiences have built our resilience and instilled in us a culture of collaboration, adaptability, and leadership that will carry with us as we step into this year’s challenge.
