Fox9 will host its annual Girls, Science and Technology event on November 12th at the Science Museum of Minnesota. The event presents many STEM-related activities, and hosts a variety of companies and organizations that support technology education. The day is geared towards young women, with the hope of inspiring them to get involved with all that STEM has to offer.
The Girls, Science and Technology event features companies like Microsoft, St. Jude Medical, and Smiths Medical, one of team 1816’s sponsors. Demonstrations include experiments, hands-on activities and interactive games.
This summer, Fox9 contacted The Green Machine about appearing at the event. The team will be carrying out demonstrations involving the 2016 season robot, as well as letting visitors experiment with the current FIRST LEGO League game, Animal Allies. In addition, The Green Machine plans to reach out to younger visitors by inviting them to try running an FLL EV3 LEGO robot to perform “mission” tasks.
Team members are looking forward to The Green Machine’s first year at the event. “I’m excited that I’ll get to help younger girls become interested in science and STEM,” says Anushka A. “If they’ve never had the opportunity to try [STEM-related activities], then I’m glad that we get to be the ones who help get them involved.”
Returning members are just as excited to participate in the event. “Female scientists from around the state are coming to speak, so I think this is a fantastic opportunity to learn from what they have to say, not just about their specific fields, but their experiences as women in STEM, and how they’ve pursued their interests,” says Harini J., one of the 2017 season assistant captains. “I also think that young women can use this to delve further into what specifically they might be interested in [regarding] STEM.”
Overall, the event is a great opportunity for all girls to learn about STEM in a fun, welcoming environment. The Green Machine is honored to be participating, and looks forward to spreading the word about STEM to many more young women. “I think it’ll be a great place to see how I can continue on this journey in STEM, and to see what more it holds,” adds Harini.
